La technique est bas\u00e9e sur les principes de la sismique r\u00e9flexion; envoi d'une onde sismique dans le fond marin et \u00e9coute des ondes refl\u00e9t\u00e9es par des couches g\u00e9ologiques.<\/p>\n<p>Il existe deux types d'\u00e9quipement pour faire le profilage marin. Le \u00abSub Bottom Profiler\u00bb ou \u00abChirp\u00bb sont des poissons int\u00e9graux qui sont tra\u00een\u00e9s dans l'eau par un c\u00e2ble derri\u00e8re le bateau. Ces syst\u00e8mes fonctionnent \u00e0 haute fr\u00e9quence permettant\u00a0d'atteindre une haute r\u00e9solution verticale.<\/p>\n<p>Pour le deuxi\u00e8me syst\u00e8me, il\u00a0s'agit d'un \u00abstreamer\u00bb d'hydrophones et d'une source d'\u00e9nergie s\u00e9par\u00e9e. La source est souvent un \u00abairgun\u00bb qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re des fr\u00e9quences moyennes (500 Hz). La r\u00e9solution est donc moins \u00e9lev\u00e9e mais la p\u00e9n\u00e9tration est sup\u00e9rieure. Les ondes refl\u00e9t\u00e9es sont capt\u00e9es par les hydrophones et enregistr\u00e9es par un sismographe.<\/p>\n<p>Dans certaines situations, le g\u00e9oradar peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 sur l'eau pour remplacer les appareils pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment mentionn\u00e9s. Le g\u00e9oradar fonctionne bien seulement dans les conditions d'eau douce peu profonde o\u00f9 la p\u00e9n\u00e9tration requise n'est pas trop grande.<\/p>\n<p>Ce syst\u00e8me permet de mettre en \u00e9vidence la compensation entre r\u00e9solution et p\u00e9n\u00e9tration du signal.
